High Fats and Butterflies

Two big events for Mia today. She started the next phase of her treatment for the metabolic disorder which is a diet know as a Ketogenic diet. The diet involves high fats and low carbohydrates. The idea is that Mia's body will learn to get it's energy from fat instead of sugar, since the nature of her disorder is that her body cannot metabolize sugar to create energy. So far she is tolerating the diet well and does not seem bothered by it.

The other big event today was the arrival of the much anticipate helmet, decorated with beautiful butterflies. Rusty, as seen here, is the one who made the mold last week and came to show us how the helmet worked.

Mia wasn't feeling so happy about the helmet at first, but once it was on she seemed okay with it.

It was pretty exciting seeing the helmet go on. It was kinda like seeing Darth Vader get his helmet for the first time, except with less evil and more butterflies.

Mia adjusted to the helmet pretty quick (seems to be her MO with just about everything) and settled in for a nice little sleep after her feeding. She'll wear the helmet on and off until she gets used to it and then will wear it almost all the time. It should take a solid month or so for the helmet to reshape her head.

This picture has nothing to do with fat or butterflies, but it was too incredibly cute not to post it.

You are right-that last pic is just so cute! So is the helmet! What a good sport she is! Mia is amazing how well she tolerates and adjusts to everything-she has an amazing spirit and presence to her that has affected everyone around her, and even via the pics on the blog. Maybe "Heroes" should change their motto-and have Mia saving the world! To heck with the cheerleader.
Mia has already changed so many live in such a positive way-she is a true Miracle, and I am so proud she is my granddaughter! and I am so proud of you and Francesca and what amazing parents you are. I love all of you so much!MommaDonna xoxox

Mia, I love you!

She shows tremendous courage and love of life. She goes through these events and then at the end, she smiles a smile which appears so content. I can't wait to meet her someday, but I might be overwhelmed by her beauty.

All my Love, Talkhouse tonight.

Good Morning! It is 5:30 and we are ready to go to Philly. Got home around 10:30 last night exhausted. But what a day!! We were so thrilled to see you all and see what an amazing place that hospital is. Wow. So many wonderful people caring for Mia. Still amazed by the whole helmet thing.

Glad we were able to spend the time with you and Francesca and beautiful Mia. You and Francesca make an incredible team. Mia has been blessed with super parents.

Gee, the birds are chirping outside and Victor is saying it is time to get going. I hope we are not crazy going down there in all this rain. Love to you all, Aunt M
